Integrating Flash with Rapid eLearning tools

Speaker: Shuvankar Kar
Conference: AFPS Design Day (26 Aug); Duration: 20 mins

Flash is an authoring tool, which is also used to develop Web-based learning material. Flash plays a vital role in rapid e-learning development. The most important factor that differentiates it from the other tools is its compatibility with screen capturing tools as well as many content authoring tools. This presentation is to demonstrate how Flash can contribute to the eLearning community by providing features that support various tools, which speed up the development process of an eLearning course. Here we will illustrate the different features of Flash as well as its compatibility with Adobe Captivate (a Screen Capturing Tool) and Articulate (a Content Authoring Tool).

Flash usage provides enormous benefits in the development of Rapid e-Learning. It provides the option of using vector graphics which enhance e-learning courses. It supports the API objects present in Articulate and Captivate which can be used for building interactivities and simulations in the e-Learning courses. It provides for customized interactive elements and integration. It also provides superior image quality and better viewing experience when published. The beneficiaries of these benefits are the e-learning development community and users of authoring tools.

I Versus Them: Transcultural Design

Speaker: Dr. Girish Prabhu
Conference: AFPS Design Day (26 Aug); Duration: 45 mins

Solutions and designs are always contextualized in a culture and users interpret products based on their cultural backgrounds and values. To meet the needs of global market, companies ensure that products are designed and developed free of any culture-specific attributes, so they can be easily localized. These internationalization processes have to consider target culture specific differences to create a design that then can be localized to meet the cultural needs. In a globalized world, it is important for designers to understand preferences dues to age differences, class Differences, gender differences and trends. In this presentation, the author will try to sensitize the audience on the topic of cross-cultural and trans-cultural design.

Thinking about User Experience design

Speaker: Sharan Grandigae
Conference: AFPS Design Day (26 Aug); Duration: 45 mins

In software development there is nothing less understood than user interface design. It is most often treated as a non-essential aspect of development, and in some cases even with fear caused by the abstract nature of the field. But are these appropriate reactions? Can design be within reach? And how could a new designer or a non-designer approach it so she may produce better designed software without going nuts in the process. This session will address these aspects simply through the speaker’s own unvarnished experience in developing software for more than fifteen years for clients in the US and India.

The Rise of the Mechanical Designer

Speaker: Deepak Pakhar
Conference: AFPS Design Day (26 Aug); Duration: 45 mins

Innovation happens. Whether designers like it or not. But whenever they play a larger part in driving innovation through design, it affects humans in more profound and positive ways as when businesses or technology drives innovation. There are fireworks around, happiness in the air, grace and beauty in our midst, when designers are at the helm! Designers are supposed to be fountainheads of creativity. Innovation is a function of creativity. However, true design driven innovation today is rare and happens way too infrequently. The speaker believes designers are not seeding or influencing innovation enough because they are towing someone else’s line most of the time. In the speaker's personal experience he sees less rigor in the design process in organizations. Designers settle for the obvious and mediocre too soon, too often. They are experimenting less, not iterating enough. They are designing by committee. This session will encourage you to look outside your design briefs and requirements docs for inspirations from life around us. Experimental art, for instance, can be an unexpected breeding ground for innovation. You must infuse thought, reflection and soul into your work. The world needs 'thinking designers' as much as it needs 'design thinkers'.
