2010 has been heralded as the year of the Mobile Developer, and what better way to celebrate than a dedicated summit for the Mobile Developer ecosystem. Mobile applications have become hugely popular with downloads predicted to reach 4 billion this year alone, rising to 21 billion by 2013.
Mobile development is complex because its ecosystem is complex. Unlike developing for a small set of platforms, Mobile development platforms sport a number of versions, with each version adding new functionality and fixes, besides introducing platform fragmentation that makes it even more complex for app developers. As the interest in mobile applications surge, so has the number of app stores - from platform/OS providers, handset manufacturers and mobile network operators, to some devices even presenting consumers with multiple stores. The app store is fast becoming the portal, deck or home page of the smartphone era, a place to go to discover new things. This is also posing a challenge for developers – which stores to publish in and how to get their apps discovered.
Mobile Developer Summit (MODS), India's biggest platform agnostic conference for mobile developers, witnessed a convergence of over a thousand mobile/web application developers, technologists, thought leaders and experts from different aspects of the mobile ecosystem to share their passion, experience, grit and learning. For attendees, this was their best opportunity to share the floor to debate and rethink the world of mobile.
At Mobile Developer Summit, experts and industry veterans held forth on topics ranging from the next big thing in app development to helping developers make the right choices for open source mobile development to showing them how to think and hack out of the box. Attendees learnt how to approach the challenge of writing code for different devices, as well as techniques and tools that helped them to gain a better understanding of how to leverage emerging technologies in both native and mobile web development. From delivering apps to the world with Nokia to leveraging the Blackberry advantage for commercial success, vendors held forth on some very exciting topics to help developers make the right choices. With over 30 sessions and several stellar keynotes, the summit was packed to make attendees' experience at the summit worthwhile.
